
On December 13, 2012, the proposal to suspend the manufacture, import, and sale of packaging materials containing bisphenol A was passed by the French Senate and was read for the second time. As an amendment to Decree No. 2010-729, the bill extends the ban on bisphenol A from baby bottles to all food-contact materials. The details include:
·The suspension includes any packaging, containers and utensils "in direct contact with food";
The suspension will take effect from the day of the next month when it is promulgated (for infants aged 0-12 months and children aged 1-3); for other packaging materials and utensils, it will take effect on January 1, 2015;
·All packages containing BPA that come into contact with food should have health warnings to prevent it from being used by pregnant women, breastfeeding women, babies and children;
·The French Public Health Code will add a ban on bisphenol A in pacifiers and teethers;
·The French government will submit a report on the feasibility of replacing BPA to the French parliament before July 1, 2014.
